Individualism against the collectivism , creator against the herd. Architect who loves to build, wishes to have clients in order to build rather than to have buildings in order to have clients; beautiful lady, the most desired one in love with the forbidden. Egoistic who is the kindest. A successful young architect at the top of his field, not there because he was the best but because he was replaceable, knows the pain. The politics of the press, the desire to have power in contrast with the pure desire, only to do the work in own terms. Unwrapping of the real meaning of 'actual selfishlessness' and 'being selfish', which one is harmful for the world in true sense.
The nature of Roark makes you think 'what is he up to?', But as you read further, you realize what a personality. Each character has its own essence, and most carry two faces, just like the ones found in real world.
Reading this book is like climbing the vattamalai murugan temple. Initially you think you would not be able to reach the top, but later, ardent desire and will invokes to reach the destiny. Similarly, initially you think why i peek in the life of architects but soon you wish to read further, because its not just about them but about you, me and every one surrounding us & if you make it – WHAT A BEAUTY!!
Rand has the unmatched ability to weave the words into beautiful panorama; her characters and their surroundings come alive on the pages. It's like you were present abode along with the characters, you were part of the story.
Howard Roark is one character, you wish to see at least one of the kind, in the real life, you wish to be like him, he makes you rethink, take a pause, reflect upon your conscious and redesign your own persona.
But are Howard Roark real? Of course not. But do you wish to be like him? At least, i wish so.
I always used to thought that leaders were first handers, but now i believe that surely they are the second handers. My hatred for the egoist turned to love, when i realized, who is egoist in true sense.
You don't wish to leave the book, it holds you, binds you to the story, to the characters. I felt pity for Peter Keating, he was like any other man, craving to be the best in other's eye, craving for fame, money, success to flaunt to others, though not bad at heart.
The one character i loathed was that of Elsworth Tohey, he was a mystery to me till the end, i wanted to know him, and when i knew him, i wished i never encounter someone like him, though its sad that there are many Mr Tohey out in the world, masked in the face of a friend.
This is the best gift, as what is better than gifting a new life to your friend.
A must read. A splendid read.
